Step 2: Cleaning and Degreasing

We apply a professional marine teak cleaner to break down salt residue, grease, mildew, and surface contamination. This is a controlled chemical process, not pressure washing, which can damage teak fibers.

Step 3: Brightening

A marine teak brightener is applied to neutralize the cleaner and restore the wood's natural golden color. This step opens the wood grain and prepares the surface for sealing.

Step 4: Sealing and Protection

We apply a premium teak sealer such as Semco or equivalent to lock in the restored color and protect the wood from future UV damage and salt exposure. Sealed teak holds its color significantly longer than unsealed teak.

Two Step Chemical Cleaning

The two step clean and brighten process is the standard maintenance approach for teak that is in reasonably good condition. It removes graying and surface contamination without removing any wood material, preserving the thickness of your teak planks. This is the method we recommend for regular maintenance and for teak that has not been severely neglected.

Sanding and Refinishing

Teak that has been severely neglected, has deep staining, or has surface damage that cannot be removed chemically may require sanding. Sanding removes a thin layer of wood to expose fresh material beneath. It produces a beautiful result but removes wood with each application, so it should only be performed when necessary. We assess your teak and recommend the right approach honestly.

How often should teak be cleaned and sealed on a South Florida boat?

In South Florida's intense UV and saltwater environment, we recommend cleaning and sealing teak every 6 to 12 months depending on how much sun exposure the deck receives and whether the vessel is kept covered or in the open. Vessels moored in direct sunlight will need more frequent attention.

In most cases yes. A professional two step clean and brighten process can restore teak that looks severely gray back to a rich golden color without removing any wood material. Teak that has cracking, deep staining, or physical damage may require sanding, but we assess each deck individually before recommending the approach.

We use premium marine teak sealers including Semco and comparable professional grade products selected for their UV resistance and longevity in South Florida's marine environment. We do not use cheap hardware store finishes that peel, flake, or require reapplication every few weeks.
